The Chumash language has been researched and preserved by the efforts and great knowledge of many people. There are Chumash dictionaries available, and you can visit online Chumash language sites (links below). These sites have been created by Dr. Richard Applegate, a renowned specialist in Chumash languages.

One way to designate the different tribes of the Chumash is by the language they speak. There are several dialects, and all are varieties of the Hokan language.

The word Chumash itself was derived from the Hokan word, michumash, which translates to, "the makers of shell bead money." The Chumash people, from Santa Cruz Island in the Channel Islands, were known to have developed a sophisticated bead money and trading system.

Some Chumash Words:

Ap House
Haku Hello
Wot Chief
Tomol Canoe
Tule Bullrush (used to make mats)
'Alapay Sky
'Alishaw Sun
Helek Hawk
Siliyik Sacred enclosure in the ground
Shup Land

These are the vowel sounds of the Chumash language:
"a" like in fall
"e" like in hen
"i" like in see
"o" like in bow
"u" like in moon
